Provide First Aid

Participants who complete this training will acquire the essential skills and practical knowledge needed to deliver an effective first aid response, strictly adhering to the standards established by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other leading national clinical organisations.

This core unit is designed for anyone across the Wollongong region who might need to administer first aid across diverse scenarios—including coastal community environments, local surf lifesaving clubs, school settings, and corporate, trade, or industrial workplaces throughout the Illawarra.

Course delivery

This training can be conducted on-site directly at your Illawarra workplace or hosted at a designated facility arranged by the training provider within the Wollongong area.

Course duration

Training timelines can fluctuate based on group dynamics and experience levels; the timeframes detailed below represent the minimum required face-to-face classroom hours:

  • Refresher Stream: Minimum of 6 hours in-person instruction

  • Blended Learning: Minimum of 6 hours in-person instruction

  • Full Face-to-Face: Minimum of 7 hours and 30 minutes in-person instruction

  • Online Theory with Practical Assessment: Minimum of 1 hour in-person assessment
     

Entry requirements

  • Physical Capabilities: Participants must possess the physical fitness required to successfully complete hands-on tasks. This includes performing 2 minutes of continuous, uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin positioned on the floor, alongside practicing effective rescue breathing techniques.

  • Digital Access (Online Study): Learners opting for digital components must have a reliable computer, smartphone, tablet, or web-enabled device with internet connectivity to complete all pre-course material.

Assessment requirements​

To successfully qualify, candidates enrolled in this course are required to demonstrate competency across both theoretical written papers and hands-on practical scenarios.

Certificate Renewal Requirements​

In compliance with Australian peak clinical bodies, industry standards recommend refreshing this qualification every 36 months (3 years).

Assessment Activities

Performance tasks and practical scenarios:

  • Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)

  • Complete a first aid incident report form based on the simulated first aid scenario

  • Perform CPR on an infant

  • Manage a casualty with anaphylaxis

  • Manage a casualty with asthma

  • Manage a choking casualty

  • Manage a casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, requiring minor wound cleaning

  • Manage a casualty with a nosebleed

  • Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation

  • Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain

  • Manage a casualty with envenomation (snake/ funnel-web spider bite)

 

Theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions.
